Super Mario Galaxy 2’s new storybook epilogue explained
In a bit of a random move from Nintendo, Super Mario Galaxy 2 received an update on Switch and Switch 2 this week that added an all-new epilogue chapter to the storybook. Many were afraid that it would tie into The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and its new story additions, but that doesn’t seem to be the case here. So today, we’re going over our interpretation of what this epilogue might mean. We’ll be covering full spoilers for Super Mario Galaxy 2, so keep that in mind before you continue!
First, we highly recommend watching the epilogue if you haven’t done so already – this is the first one we found on YouTube, for instance. It’s important that you’ve read Super Mario Galaxy 2’s storybook chapters as well, because they talk about two characters who are important to the epilogue – Mari and Lu (Lubba), two Luma twins who were separated for centuries.
In the epilogue, it’s revealed that Mari and Lu did eventually meet up with each other again, and together they transformed into two suns that filled the starlight with sunlight. This is interesting, because it could be an attempt at explaining why so many more of Super Mario Galaxy 2’s space levels have blue skies rather than the deep space backgrounds of the first Super Mario Galaxy. In any case, Rosalina witnesses Mari and Lu transform and is deeply moved that the two finally met each other again.
Afterward, a young girl who looks much like Rosalina appears next to her and the two briefly talk about what it takes to meet their special someone. Rosalina responds that it takes a heart that never gives up, and the epilogue ends by stating that the Garden (presumably referring to the last dome in Super Mario Galaxy 1) is now forever lit by Mari and Lu’s light.
Many on social media guessed that the young girl that appears next to Rosalina must be a young Peach because she wears the same blue earrings. However, this is unlikely – in the added storybook chapter of Super Mario Galaxy 1, Rosalina herself wears these same blue earrings as well. Therefore, the young girl who appears in Super Mario Galaxy 2’s epilogue is most likely a symbolic representation of Rosalina’s younger self. Still, there’s a good amount to unpack here, and it seems the storybook is in kind of a similar category to Donkey Kong Bananza’s plot – in which much of it is going to be based on your own personal interpretation of when and how things happen. Interestingly enough, fans have also pointed out that the yellow butterfly that appears at the end of the epilogue also lands on Mario during Super Mario Galaxy’s ending.
