Video: Super Mario Galaxy 2 patch improves lighting issue, but other graphical quirks still present

Players have found that with the new Super Mario Galaxy 2 patch, Nintendo has improved a notable lighting issue that previously impacted the game’s Switch version.

You might have heard that Super Mario Galaxy 2 was updated to version 1.4.0 last night. The inclusion of the new storybook chapter was definitely the highlight of the patch. However, as we just mentioned, there is a graphical improvement.

Many players took notice of the tree in Tall Trunk Galaxy. Simply put, it didn’t look anywhere near the original Wii version. It’s definitely better now, but GVG does point out that it’s not a perfect “fix”. There’s still a lot of light bleeding through the tree, so it’s not quite on par with the Wii original.

GVG also examined things further to see if other graphical improvements have been made. Unfortunately, there are still issues with color banding. Also, while far from a major problem, it still looks like the depth-of-field effect on the stage selection screen is still essentially broken and looks more “checkerboardy”.

You can check out the full video from GVG below, which also shows off the new storybook chapter.
