Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is here, and to celebrate, new icons are now available on Nintendo Switch Online.
Icons will be rotated weekly over the next month or so. You can grab designs for characters, backgrounds, and frames. Characters cost 10 Platinum Points each on My Nintendo. For backgrounds and frames, they’re 5 Platinum Points each.

Today, we’re going over every single aspect of Nintendo Switch Online as well as the strengths and weaknesses of each one to answer the question of whether the service is worth it.
Believe it or not, Nintendo Switch Online is turning eight years old later this year. And needless to say, it didn’t go over all too well when it first launched all the way back in 2018. Up until then, online play in Nintendo games was free, and players weren’t too keen on turning that basic ability into a permanent subscription. Fast forward to now, though, and NSO offers all sorts of benefits beyond your typical online matches. So the question is, then: is Nintendo Switch Online worth it with a subscription in 2026?

Virtual Boy icons added to Nintendo Switch Online

As a new bonus for Nintendo Switch Online members, icons for the Virtual Boy are now available.
Just five icons are up for grabs. If you’re interested in any of them from this set, you’ll need to fork over 10 Platinum Points a piece on My Nintendo.

Nintendo Switch Online adds new Virtual Boy games in May 2026 update

A new set of Virtual Boy games are live on Nintendo Switch Online as part of May 2026 update. The lineup includes V-Tetris, Jack Bros., Space Invaders Virtual Collection, Virtual Bowling, and Vertical Force.
All of these titles can be accessed after downloading the latest update for the Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics app. Note that you need to be a member of the Expansion Pack tier for Nintendo Switch Online.

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream icons added to Nintendo Switch Online

April 15: Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream is here, and Nintendo is celebrating with some new icons on Switch Online. They can be claimed on both Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 now with an active membership.
Per usual, icons are available for characters, backgrounds, and frames. You’ll need to hand over 10 Platinum Points on My Nintendo for every character icon. The backgrounds and frames go for 5 Platinum Points each.
Nintendo Switch Online adds Mach Rider, Excitebike 64 icons

The latest classic icons are live on Nintendo Switch Online with different designs available for Mach Rider and Excitebike 64.
These are play to redeem icons. That means you need to play Mach Rider and Excitebike 64 at least once to unlock their respective icons. When we say “play” though, that just really means booting up their apps for a second.

MLB The Show 26 is North America’s next Nintendo Switch Online Game Trial

MLB The Show 26 will be offered in North America as a new Game Trial for Switch Online members, Nintendo announced today.
That means with an active membership, you can play the game for free. The entirety of the title can be accessed during the trial, which is happening between April 23 at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET to April 29 at 11:59 PM PT / April 30 at 2:59 AM ET. Remember that save data transfers to the full version. You’ll also earn 100 Platinum Points on My Nintendo for participating.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition icons live on Switch Online

March 25: Super Mario Bros. Wonder is just now releasing its new Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, and to celebrate, fans can pick up new icons on Switch Online. Only a base membership is required, so you don’t need to be a part of the Expansion Pack tier.
Designs are available for characters, backgrounds, and frames. Rosalina is now playable, and she’s gotten a couple of icons (and there are plenty of others as well). For characters, you’ll need to fork over 10 Platinum Points on My Nintendo. Backgrounds and frames are 5 Platinum Points as usual.
Nintendo Switch Online adds Pac-Man, Mendel Palace, The Tower of Druaga

Three more classic games are now available on Nintendo Switch Online with Pac-Man, Mendel Palace, and The Tower of Druaga. They can be played on both Nintendo Switch 2 and Switch.
All of these games can be accessed in the NES Nintendo Classics app. The Tower of Druaga counts as an import.

Kirby’s Dream Land, Kirby & The Amazing Mirror icons added to Nintendo Switch Online

Nintendo is starting off April with the latest retro icons for Switch Online members, this time for Kirby’s Dream Land and Kirby & The Amazing Mirror.
For both games, you’ll need to boot up their respective apps. That means for Kirby’s Dream Land, you’ll need to start up the Game Boy app. For Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, it’s the GBA one – though you’ll need to be a part of the Expansion Pack tier in order to access it.
