Nintendo not ruling out another Switch 2 price increase in the future
Nintendo just announced a price increase for Switch 2. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean the system’s cost won’t go up any further.
We’ve seen unprecedented changes with gaming hardware prices during this console generation. In the past, you’d typically expect a system to go down in price over time – or at least stay the same. However, all of the console manufactures have moved forward with price increases.
During Nintendo’s financial results briefing Q&A last week, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa was asked about the possibility of further price adjustments in the future. He said the following in response (via machine translation):
“While we have not specifically detailed the precise impact this price adjustment will have on Nintendo Switch 2 sales, we recognize that it will, to some extent, raise the barrier to entry for prospective buyers.
Nevertheless, the most critical aspect of the dedicated game console business is providing compelling gameplay experiences that offer value exceeding the price point. We plan to continue releasing a diverse range of titles – both from Nintendo and our third-party software partners – and by presenting these titles alongside the unique new experiences that only the Nintendo Switch 2 can offer, we aim to further expand the console’s installed base.
While there remain uncertainties regarding how component prices will trend in the future, we acknowledge that we are likely to feel the impact not only this year but next year as well. Looking beyond that timeframe, we intend to prepare ourselves to respond flexibly to whatever circumstances may arise.”
If you’re wondering why Nintendo decided to increase Switch 2’s price, we just got a more lengthy explanation from Furukawa. You have coverage of that here.
