Donald Glover is the voice of Yoshi in every version of the Mario Galaxy movie worldwide, Miyamoto explains why
During the Japanese premiere of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie this week, Shigeru Miyamoto revealed that there’s just one voice for Yoshi. That, of course, is Donald Glover.
When it comes to just about every character in the movie, different actors are involved. For example, Chris Pratt is the voice of Mario in English, but it’s Mamoru Miyano in Japanese. When it comes to Yoshi though, it’s still Glover in the Japanese version.
Miyamoto was asked asked how Yoshi made it into The Super Mario Galaxy Movie during the Japanese event. That lead him to discuss Glover’s involvement and how it’s his voice in every version of the film.
Miyamoto said:
“The actor who played Yoshi is an American named Donald Glover, and he really wanted to be in a Mario movie. He wanted to play Yoshi. I said, ‘Yoshi only says Yoshi’, but Donald said, ‘I can say 20 different Yoshis.’ So I thought, ‘That’s global,’ and Yoshi’s voice is the same all over the world. There’s no Japanese Yoshi.”
This wasn’t the only thing we’ve heard about Yoshi this week. Miyamoto also revealed that before The Super Mario Galaxy Movie came to be, the character was considered for his own movie. You can read more about that here.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is in theaters now.
