Super Mario RPG review

System: Switch
Release date: November 17, 2023
Developer: Square Enix / ArtePiazza
Publisher: Nintendo

As a classic of the SNES era of RPGs, a remake of Super Mario RPG was a bit of a shock reveal earlier this year. Originally a collaboration between Nintendo and Square, it was a bit of a surprise back then as well. With a complete and from the ground up remake, we see new 3D graphics, crisp menus, and a bit of extra content for a game on Switch that many would say is one of the best RPGs of its time – but what about now? Let’s take a look at how Super Mario RPG fairs in today’s standards, as spoiler free as possible.

Llamasoft The Jeff Minter Story game list

Digital Eclipse today revealed Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story, and we not only have full details and a trailer, but a full list of games as well. Note that news about launch timing is not yet available.

The Switch release – which is the second entry in the Gold Master Series following The Making of Karateka – is an interactive documentary pays tribute to “one of the weirdest, wildest game developers to ever exist”. It’ll come with a library featuring 42 games from eight platforms including the unreleased Konix Multi-System hardware, four “interactive timelines”, over an hour of all-new video featurettes, the ability to save, load, and rewind gameplay at any point, and more.

Here’s the full Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story game list:

Super Mario RPG Monster List

New to the recently-released Super Mario RPG remake is a Monster List that tracks every single enemy in the game. When you encounter an enemy, it’s automatically added to the database. However, its entry is not complete until you successfully use Mallow’s Thought Peek spell on it. Several enemies have missable Thought Peek entries – luckily, there’s an NPC in Booster Pass hidden in a cliff who will sell you new Monster List entries in exchange for three Frog Coins. Feel free to check out our Frog Coin farming guide before you continue here.

Touch Detective 3 + The Complete Case Files

November 18: Nicalis is localizing Touch Detective 3 + The Complete Case Files for English release in the west, the company just announced. It will be available in Q1 2024.

This is the first time the game will be leaving Japan. It first came to the 3DS in 2024, followed by a Switch version in October 2022.

Here’s an overview of the game courtesy of Nicalis:

Zelda movie director Wes Ball

Wes Ball, the director of the upcoming movie based on The Legend of Zelda, has commented on what he’s going for with the film, saying that he’s aiming for “a live-action Miyazaki.” Hayao Miyazaki is the co-founder of Studio Ghibli and led the way on acclaimed animated films such as Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and My Neighbor Totoro.

Ball spoke to EW about the project while he oversees postproduction on Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. He said his vision is “this awesome fantasy-adventure movie that isn’t like Lord of the Rings, it’s its own thing. I’ve always said, I would love to see a live-action Miyazaki. That wonder and whimsy that he brings to things, I would love to see something like that.”
