Nintendo needs to bring back Animal Crossing’s weirdness

Today, we’re talking about how the next Animal Crossing could shake up its characters and art style and return to its roots by taking cues from the original GameCube title.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons sold nearly 50 million copies on Nintendo Switch. It’s safe to say the game’s release in March 2020 became a cultural phenomenon of sorts, and it’s elevated the series as a whole to become one of Nintendo’s most popular franchises. That said, despite this popularity, we haven’t seen or heard anything much about Animal Crossing other than the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition for New Horizons – indeed, it takes a very long time to develop an all-new entry. Given how popular New Horizons was on Nintendo Switch, it’s safe to assume a sequel is in development for Nintendo Switch 2. It’s just a matter of when we’ll see it announced.

For Animal Crossing: New Horizons players, a new version 3.0.1 update was just made available. It can be downloaded for both Nintendo Switch 2 and Switch.
We’re getting a bunch of bug fixes across the board here. Almost everything pertains to both versions, but there are a couple of things here specific to Nintendo Switch 2. Worth noting that on the new console, the vibration intensity now matches the Nintendo Switch version.
Below is the full rundown of the update:
Animal Crossing: New Horizons still has a major flaw, even after the 3.0 update

Not too long ago, Nintendo released a fairly large new update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons – the first in almost four years. It adds all sorts of new features, from Splatoon and Zelda items to a brand-new resort hotel to classic games you can play within your town. It also makes some really helpful quality-of-life changes: you can access crafting materials from your storage no matter where on your island you are, and you can craft multiple items all at once. Between these changes and the ability to access your storage anywhere via the storage sheds, it’s so much easier to fully decorate your island now than it was when the game first launched almost six years ago. That being said, Animal Crossing: New Horizons still has one major flaw that may well never be fixed – tool durability.
Nintendo explains why it released free major updates for Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Splatoon 3

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has spoken about why the company came out with free major updates for Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Splatoon 3.
Last month, Animal Crossing received its big 3.0.0 patch at no extra cost alongside a paid Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. Meanwhile, Splatoon 3 also just dropped a big patch with health bars and more, but last year, version 10.0.0 dropped which included some enhancements for Nintendo Switch 2 players.
During the Q&A session of Nintendo’s financial results this week, Furukawa had this to say when asked about the business rationale for releasing such major free updates for existing Switch titles after the Switch 2 launch:
