Star Fox

During yesterday’s Nintendo Direct, Capcom unveiled Monster Hunter X’s latest collaboration. The game will feature a partnership with Nintendo for Star Fox at launch. By visiting 7-Eleven stores, players can receive the special costume shown in the trailer below.

The new Ratchet & Clank game for PlayStation 4 features a noticeable reference to Star Fox. In the video below, you can hear one of the characters calling out to the main player to “do a barrel roll”. Of course, that’s one of the most recognizable lines in Star Fox’s history!

You’ll notice Laura’s audio cutting in and out, her microphone quality was totally mangled, and there are a few weird snags here and there. The folks over at Unseen64 once again did what they do best and unearthed footage and information from the video game history books. This time, they’ve covered NesGlider, a game that would eventually end up being the SNES classic Star Fox.

NesGlider was developed by Argonaut Games for the NES (and eventually the SNES) in order to show Nintendo what 3D games would look like on their hardware. While the game looked impressive for its time, it suffered from being a bit slow and clunky despite pushing the SNES to its limits. Check out some footage from the game below:

Nonetheless, Nintendo was impressed and decided to invest into a hardware upgrade that would allow the SNES to seamlessly handle 3D graphics. Working together with Argonaut, they developed the Super FX chip, which finally made 3D games possible on the Super Nintendo. Argonaut and Nintendo then worked together on the NesGlider prototype, and in a collaborative effort, the game evolved into what we know as Star Fox.

Shigeru Miyamoto has confirmed a couple of notable elements about the recently-announced Star Fox game for Wii U.

First, Nintendo will be including an optional co-op mode in which two players command one Arwing with one flying the ship and the other shooting from it. Miyamoto also spoke about two-screen cut-scenes in which you’d get one view on the television, and another on the GamePad.

You can find all of Miyamoto’s comments below.
