After raising enough funds on Kickstarter, Studio Massimo Gauthier has confirmed plans to bring Diorama Break to Nintendo Switch.

The game was able to raise about $70,000 in total. Along with funding the game itself, hitting the Kickstarter goal secured a Nintendo Switch version.

Diorama Break is described as a tactics RPG in which players can talk directly to the hero. A number of games influenced this one, including Xenoblade, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Undertale, and more.

Here’s an official overview:

Marshal your wits and fight your way through turn-based battles and awkward conversations alike. Choose your words and actions with care. Or don’t. See what happens…

At the onset, you (yes, you) will be connected to a hero with his own plans, hopes, and fears, in a world that has raised him for this role. Question him, advise him, and guide him on his way. Your treatment of him will shape how events unfold.

Turns are split into 6 substeps, actions have varying substep durations and areas of effect. Slower actions might hit harder, while faster actions can be easier to land.

Gameplay

  • Both Player and Enemy units queue multiple actions ahead of time, then execute them concurrently.
  • Time your actions and movements carefully to hit your opponents before they hit you.
  • Inspired by fighting game concepts such as footsies, frame data, and attack interruption.

Key Features

  • A varied soundtrack (with genre inspirations including jazz fusion, electronic, and folk music) which reacts dynamically to gameplay.
  • A narrative with layers.
  • Built on top of a custom 2D game engine.
