The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has best opening day of the year at the box office, best opening Wednesday in April ever
We have initial results for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie at the office, and the film is already breaking records.
First, it’s been revealed that the movie earned $34 million for its debut, which is the best opening day so far this year. It beat out Project Hail Mary, which brought in $33.1 million for its Friday release/previews.
Additionally, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie had the best opening Wednesday in April ever. The previous record holder? That was The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which generated $31.7 million.
It remains to be seen how well The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will do in the coming days. However, based on the trajectory for the series’ previous film, it could have the biggest 5-day domestic opening since Moana 2 ($225.4M), and the biggest 3-day opening since Wicked: For Good ($147M). The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is expected to see the biggest U.S./Canada opening this year.
