Pokemon Pokopia director discusses the game’s different multiplayer modes
With less than a month to go until launch, news surrounding Pokemon Pokopia continues to surface and fan anticipation keeps rising.
In a recent interview with Famitsu, game director Takuto Edagawa shared additional details about the project, revealing that this is the most ambitious title ever developed by Omega Force.
“I can’t give a specific number of people,” Edagawa explained, “but this is the largest number of staff involved in any title developed by Omega Force to date.”
Edagawa also elaborated further on the game’s multiplayer component, which works exactly as shown in the previously released trailer. Players can either visit a host’s main island or create a completely separate “blank” island that exists independently from story mode progression. This second option allows players to work together to develop the island and transform it into the peaceful village of their dreams.
The most notable detail is that even if the host (the island owner) is not actively playing, others can still enter and continue playing. The development team refers to this system as “Cloud Island.” Functionally, it operates much like private, persistent servers in Minecraft. While this does mean such online features could theoretically be shut down in the future, it opens up a wide range of possibilities and makes Pokemon Pokopia far more appealing for players whose schedules rarely align. According to Edagawa, this flexibility was the main motivation behind the feature.
Thanks to Eurogamer for today’s news. Pokemon Pokopia launches on Nintendo Switch 2 on May 5. Recently, Edagawa also discussed the average time required to complete the game’s main campaign, if you missed it, be sure to check out our previous coverage.
