Nintendo has sued the U.S. government over tariffs [update: paused]
March 6: Reports are coming in that Nintendo of America is suing the United States government over tariffs initiated by President Donald Trump put in place last year.
The complaint was filed today in the U.S. Court of International Trade. It states that since February 1, 2025, Trump has implemented “unlawful” executive orders “imposing tariffs on imports from a vast swath of countries.” Nintendo is seeking a refund “with interest” the tariffs it paid.
The company’s lawyers said: “[Nintendo of America] has standing to sue because it is the importer of record for goods that were subject to IEEPA Duties.” It added that Nintendo “suffered injury” from those tariffs.

In other news, The Pokemon Company sent out a statement yesterday after the White House decided to use Pokemon Pokpia in a meme. Coverage of that can be found here.
March 13: Nintendo’s lawsuit against the U.S. government has been automatically stayed / paused. Based on an order last December, it was determined that all companies with these types of cases would be automatically stayed pending the results of a tariff case that had made it to the U.S. Supreme Court. Following that, last week, a judge in the trade court ruled that companies impacted by tariffs should receive refunds, which could be issued starting in April.
