Gobble announced for Nintendo Switch 2 and Switch, new Nippon Ichi Software side-scrolling action game
Nippon Ichi Software has just announced Gobble, a new game for Nintendo Switch 2 and Switch. In Japan, it’s due out on September 24, 2026 – a western launch will likely follow later.
Gobble is a side-scrolling action game. The title comes from Nippon Ichi Software’s internal “Project Pitch Fest”, the same event which brought us Yomawari and The Liar Princess and the Blind Prince.
Here are the first details:
Story
Once upon a time… this world was filled with terrifying creatures called “monsters,” and the lives of people were threatened by the evil “Demon King” who led them. In this desperate situation, one young man challenged the Demon King, and after a fierce battle, defeated him, and at the same time, all the monsters were wiped out. Later, this brave young man was known as the “Hero.” Root, who grew up listening to such old stories, is suddenly confronted by a monster that was supposed to have disappeared. Unable to fight the monster, Root finds himself in a pinch, where he encounters an arrogant and selfish bird monster.
“Use me,” the hungry monster tells him, and his peaceful daily life falls apart. “I’m hungry!!”
Characters
Luto: A boy who dreams of becoming a hero and a monster who acquires abilities by preying on enemies go on an adventure.
A brave but reckless boy lives with his family in a small village. When a monster appears in the village, he ignores his family’s warnings and rushes into the commotion, which not only separates him from his family but also puts him in a difficult situation. In this situation, he meets a mysterious monster named “Kamael” and reluctantly follows him, setting out on a journey to find his separated family.
Camael: the self-proclaimed strongest monster.
A bird-like monster that speaks human language. He looks down on humans and uses Root as a “servant” to satisfy his own hunger. Despite being a monster, he is an oddball who enjoys “preying” on other monsters, and is able to use the power he consumes as his own. He has little interest in anything other than eating, and is constantly at odds with Root.
Cartoon-style graphics
One of the elements that is essential to talking about this title, Gobble, is its cartoon-style graphics. The characters are drawn in a deformed, pop style, and their expressions change constantly with emotion, giving the game a lively feel.
Onomatopoeia
When you enter a stage, you’ll see many onomatopoeias that describe Root’s actions, the sounds of the wind, etc. Combined with the cartoon-style visuals, common actions like “running” and “jumping” are also expressed as “DASH” and “HOP,” creating an exciting feeling that makes you feel like you’re watching an animation. Each of Root’s movements is accompanied by an onomatopoeia. Onomatopoeia such as “chilly” and “drafty” convey a chilly atmosphere.
Comics
Between stories, scenes that look like they’ve been cut out from a comic are inserted. This powerful presentation, which you can’t get from just reading the text, allows players to have fun just by looking. There are special effects even as you progress through the stages!
Predation is the key to the game
There are many monsters on the stages that Route advances through! With the help of Kamael, you can face the monsters that attack you. You can devour defeated enemies. By consuming enemies, you will gain predation hearts, which act as a substitute for physical strength, and depending on the monster, you will be able to steal and use their abilities, giving you an advantage in clearing the stages!
